Washburn County bedrock is mainly Cambrian sandstones, with a few Precambrian occurrences, including quartzite and swath of 1.1 billion year old (Keweeanwan) volcanic rocks in the northern portion. Bedrock is rarely exposed in outcrop due to thick glacial drift. Rock collecting can be fruitful in the glacial debris, which can produce on occasion "Lake Superior" agates, banded iron formation, drift copper nuggets and a variety of other rocks.
