The peak, mainly composed of massive amphibolite, culminates at 2475 meters and is situated northwest of Bourg d'Oisans, near Rochetaille.

de Bournon discovered the epidote crystals at Bourg d'Oisans which were later described by Romé de l'Isle. He called them "green schorl".

As Bourg d'Oisans is the type locality for epidote, it is possible that the original specimens came from this place.

Most of the pieces recovered came from near the top of the mountain, in a very steep, nearly inaccessible place. The vugs were sometimes more than a square meter in size.
