Fourteen Au placer deposits are distributed along the Kuryong river (previously known as Kyuryu river, following the Japanese pronunciation) in the North Pyongan province.
The source of the gold nuggets are the Mesozoic gold deposits scattered in the North Pyongan province, including the famous Unsan Au deposit.
Deposits in the upstream are located in Unsan county, while mid-stream and downstream deposits are located in Kujang county and Nyongbyon county.
