A former Fe occurrence/mine in goethite (limonite) ore located in the town of Amenia, but near Sharon Junction, just across the border in Millerton. Owned by the Sharon Bessemer Ore & Iron Co. Closed 1888. Workings featured a 500 foot wide pit.
This former mine (now a pond) is intersected by two different roads each named Sharon Station Road. Besides once having a train station, Sharon Station was the site of the huge Manhattan Mining Company mine. Large quantities of iron ore were shipped to local and regional iron furnaces via the railroad until the late 1890's. The company also operated a blast furnace that produced "pig iron" that was shipped out to foundries to make cast iron products.
This mine was operated as recently as 1902. The only rock exposed is dolomitic limestone, a compact variety of which forms the south wall of the pit and dips towards the east. A similar dolomite is reported to form the foot wall of the relatively flat-lying ore body. On the southeast side of the pit is found the cover of pebbly till cemented by limonite, while east of and overlying the iron conglomerate is a bed of marly clay dipping eastward about 15o and filled with freshwater gasteropods determined by Dr. Dall to be largely species of Valvata tricarinata Say and Physa hetterostropha Say; species which range from the Pliocene to the present.
