Name(s) in local language(s):
Mina Marbella, Mina Honda, Benahavís
Historical mining group dated from XVIII (1749,1787) and XIX (1813) centuries. Ores were mined for pure graphites masses up to 90% mass volume, and Fe-Ni-Cu sulphides (chalcopyrite-pyrrotite-cubanite), included in Alpine type plagioclases and spinel lherzolites (Sierra Bermeja massif). Graphite occurs inside irregular veins with iron hydroxides, malachite and chrysocolla, and minor weathered Cu-Fe-Ni sulphides. Limonite-goethite gossan crops out along the mine trenches, highlighting graphite nodules and "habas" (miners' designation for round beans "kidney shapes" graphite) with minor chromite, nepouite group-garnierite, and nickel silicates, too.
The main shaft named originally "Mina Honda" was driven in highly weathered peridotites. Inside the shaft, graphite fills veins, irregular and stockwork mineralization in conjunction with iron hydroxides.
The groundwork turned unstable as the weathering process occurred through the whole peridotite massif.
Currently, only the main shaft is visible on the ground although care must be taken as ground conditions easily turn unstable. Dumping places and waste areas are covered by wild vegetation.
