Zeolites are found in the altered lower basalt flows of Eocene age along the Calapooya River, near Dollar, Linn County, Oregon. Extensive Miocene basalt flows cover the lower Eocene flows but are devoid of zeolites. Two main sites were found in the early 1960's by Dan Lorimor who worked for Weyerhaeuser and Boyd Care who ran a rock shop in Sweethome, Oregon. Together they found the best specimens in the Calapooya.
One remarkable "pocket" was found in highly decomposed red basalt along a logging road on the north side of the Calapooya River Valley near Washout Creek. While driving along the altered red basalt they noticed a circular 2 meter gray mud area with white "bones" sticking out of it. They stuck in their pick and rolled out specimens of white stilbite that had not been destroyed when the pocket decomposed. They filled up their truck with fine specimens with no matrix that only needed extensive cleaning.
The second remarkable pocket or pockets were found across the valley in the same flow that produce the stilbite "bones", near McKinley Creek. Along the logging road was an exposed vertical pocket 60 cm wide, 2 meters high and 4 meters deep lined with pointed stilbite crystals, up to 5 cm long. After the pocket had been cleaned out, the back wall sounded hollow, removal of the back wall rock exposed a clean white cavity the same size as the first, lined with snow white mordenite-quartz, stalactites of delicate mordenite, up to 60 cm long, with white double terminated stilbite and long chains of stilbite on the walls of mordenite-quartz. A few mordenite stalactites were saved but most were destroyed when handled. These pockets produced truck loads of specimens.
Smaller pockets were found in the altered basalt near the Calapooya River that produced chabazite, mesolite, heulandite, and stilbite.
Gates block the logging roads to these sites. Collecting is not allowed.
