Sulphur was extracted from the "gessoso-solfifera" formation, an evaporitic cenozoic (Messinian) formation that appears almost with continuity in all Apennine reliefs from Tuscany to Sicily.
Perticara has been opened probably by ancient Romans, and it has been surely used during the last 500 years. There are many kilometres of tunnels at various levels, up to 740 m depth. The “boom” of mining activity has been in 1917 (sulphur was important to build explosives for WWI) with Montecatini Society there were excavated almost 100 km of galleries on 9 levels. The mine closed in 1964. Now there is an interesting museum.
