The Shire of Chittering is on the north-eastern fringes of the Perth metropolitan area, and covers 2750 square kilometres. The shire's population is 3520 (2012). The shire encompasses part of the northern Darling Plateau (Darling Range) marking the western edge of the Yilgarn Craton.

The southern section of the shire is forested, with fruit growing (especially citrus, viticulture and olives), farmland, and hobby farms. It is generally hilly. The northern portion of the shire gradually becomes less hilly and forested with cereal growing and sheep the main focus.

The main town is Bindoon, meaning 'place where yams grow' in the local Noongar language.

Attractions include scenic drives through the Chittering Valley, food outlets, craft produce. The bakery at Bindoon is highly recommended.

No major mining is known in the shire, or significant specimens in private collections.
