A lead zinc and iron deposit formed in a MSV type deposit in Cretaceous limestones. The deposit was mined chiefly for its iron ores from the eleventh century until 1951. First oxides of iron were mined and then later subterranean galleries mined siderite. There are many galleries and a least one open mine mined in the hill called "Iron Mountain or Montaña de Hierro", which is above the iron furnaces.
