Extensive beds of flint-bearing chalk are located in and around Lingheath which have been exploited via shallow shaft excavation since Neolithic times. Raw flint nodules were then taken to Brandon, the dominant center for flint-knapping in England (which produced enormous quantities of gunflints even into the 20th Century). Associated flint mining sites include Brandon in Suffolk County and Grimes Graves in nearby Norfolk.
