Extensive beds of flint-bearing chalk are located in and around Brandon which have been exploited via shallow shaft excavation since Neolithic times. Brandon was the dominant center for flint-knapping in England, producing enormous quantities of gunflints even into the 20th Century. Wrote one circa 1900 visitor: "...though I only arrived here this morning... I feel that I have seen enough of flint houses, flint chapels, flint sheds, flint garden walls, and heaps of chalk-whitened flints to last me a lifetime." Associated flint mining sites include Lingheath in Suffolk County and Grimes Graves in nearby Norfolk.
