Louisville Cement Company opened the quarry in the 1860s. As of 2009, the open pit was some 1,200 acres. Limestone was mined for cement and mortar mix. Aggrock opened an aggregate quarry within the large pit in the 1990s to mine the Louisville Limestone, which had too much Mg for cement. Cement production ceased about 2022+/-.

This quarry has been famous for Devonian fossils since the late 19th century, especially enrolled Eldridgeops trilobites and brachiopods (Spinocystria, Mediosprifer, and Pseudoatrypa) with silicified lophophores preserved.

Between the (recent) Waldron Shale exposure in the sump pit and the basal New Albany Shale on the top of the quarry, over 600 species of fossils are documented. Minerals are less common and unimpressive.
