Ex-Navy property. Currently a bald eagle sanctuary managed by Bear Mountain State Park. Open to public access only at gravel parking areas along access road and near railroad tracks. Area is heavily patrolled not only by State Park Police, but also by CSX Railroad police. Be sure not to trespass on the railroad right-of-way. Best mineralogy is in the area west of the railroad rock cuts at the north end of the island. Best to hike through the woods west of the rock cuts as walking along the train tracks is not allowed. Do not enter ANY fenced area. Carrying collecting tools outside of a backpack is NOT a good idea.
