Grossmont district
This area includes several varied gold, nickel and pegmatite mines, approximately 15 kilometres south-west of Coolgardie, and 1-2 kilometres west of the Victoria Rocks road.
The Grossmont Gold Mine is a large abandoned gold mine, of two huge pits and equally massive mullock piles, on top of a hill overlooking the surrounding area. Not enough could be gleaned from the public domain to write anything meaningful on its history or geology. It is an interesting site to fossick, with agate/chalcedony veins in the upper levels of the mine, and possible secondary nickel species in the surrounding area.
The small Norris mine is about 1 kilometre south, and appears to have been mined in conjunction with Grossmont.
The Golden Web/Melanie Mine is about 2 kilometres south-west of Norris, and Lord Bob Mine is next to the Victoria Rocks Road, about 2 kilometres before the turnoff to Grossmont. A ferrocolumbite specimen was recently seen for sale from this mine.
The Grossmont mica/blue topaz deposit is said to be within sight of the Grossmont gold mine. It has been a popular fossicking site over the years, though recent nickel exploration has seen numerous tracks and diggings through the area, making the location of anything difficult, but clear topaz can be found. The site is of interest as blue topaz is rare in Western Australia. The site was discovered in 1896, and some mining took place on the pegmatite. When next investigated in 1913, it was already abandoned. Mining during this period formed an opencut 15m in length, 3m wide, to 6 m depth. Nearby was a 9 metre vertical shaft. Some leases were applied over the pegmatite in the 1940's but it appears little mining has taken place since the original period. The reference states the pegmatite is a 3-4m thick vein, but the opencut was in such poor condition from over one hundred years of neglect that no zoning or geology could be determined. Species from the deposit are cleavelandite, damourite, lepidolite, microcline, light blue common opal, and topaz as massive opaque light blue, pale blue or white.
