Margabal is a historic mine, a tiny hole in the south-West of France, which probably produces among the finest torbernites in the world!
The mine was open for a very short time for uranium ore, from 1957 to 1960.
It is a small mine, about only 100 m of extension.
During the summer of 1997, well after the blasting of the only entrance, some motivated collectors have managed to open a new entrance by digging a tunnel from the top of the mine. The tunnel follows a vein of smoky quartz with a bit of metatorbernite.
In the same year, an exceptional piece, undoubtedly the most beautiful metatorbernite in the world, a stalactite of nearly 50 cm long was found by J. Adani! This incredible specimen is now in the Museum of Natural History in Paris.
Note: Situation in late May 2025. The mine is now sealed with a 1-meter-thick wall, featuring a bat access port (partially cut through).(https://www.mindat.org/mesg-746255.html).
