A locality near Port Clinton, this was the first discovery of phosphate ore in South Australia in 1899-1890. Nodular phosphate occurs in Precambrian dolomites and magnesites.
Historically important phosphate quarries, noted as being the first discovered and mined in South Australia. Ore was mined from cavities, and pockets of soft, yellow to grey carbonaceous marl, sand, and clay. The host rock was phosphorite of the Cambrian Kulpara Formation. The phosphate rock was low grade, with production from the late 1890s to the early 1920s in the order of ~10,000 tonnes from several deposits over a strike length of ~1800m from Clinton Quarries in the north to workings at Bakers Gully in the south. Anomalous Pb-Zn analyses were recorded. Point location is that of the largest remaining open cut on section 349.
