Winsford Rock Salt Mine


Opened in 1844, by 1897 Winsford was the largest producer of salt in England, but by the late 1800s the salt market had reached over capacity and in 1892 the mine closed due to competition from the Northwich salt mines.

The mine was reopened after the last of the Northwich mines flooded in 1928 and is the UK's only dedicated working rock salt mine. Workings reach a depth of 150m.

It became part of ICI in 1937 and is currently operated by Salt Union Ltd.

A salt mine producing 1.8 million tons per year.
