Scufflin’ Acres Farm is an amethyst locality near Prospect, Virginia. The location is found on the Simpson Dairy Farm and the prospect is operated by Mary K. Simpson. Collectors are allowed to collect at the location for a fee of $20 per day. The location is known for its dark amethyst, sometimes noted as “smoky amethyst” and Cumberland quartz habits.
Many of amethyst specimens from the locality suffer from a coating of fine to moderately coarse quartz powder which coats the crystals in a single direction. Tentative explanations for this phenomenon suggest that the quartz powder fell through the fissure under gravity and landed on the upper surfaces of crystals in more spacious areas below. This has led to many of the specimens from the locality to have a matte finish or roughly coated surface.
A wide variety of amethyst has been noted from the location: dark “smoky” amethyst, light amethyst (rare), clear quartz, milky quartz, chalcedony coating quartz, black zoning in smoky amethyst, internal amethyst phantoms, and quartz scepters.
