Located about 5 km NNW of Salzgitter.
An iron mine started in 1860 and finally closed on 30 December 1977.
The mine became world-famous for the mining disaster on 24 October 1963 and the following "Miracle of Lengede"; the rescue of 11 miners from the flooded mine 14 days later on 7 November 1963.
All in all, out of 129 miners at work at the time of the flooding of the underground workings 29 men died in the disaster.
