Badlands to the south of the Paderno church, close to Bologna.
"Paterno" seems to be a misnomer.
It is considered as the "type locality" of the Bologna Stone, which is made of baryte in the form of heavy concretions with fibrous radial formations that widen toward the periphery of the stone. In 1602, Vincenzo Casciarolo, a cobbler by trade and dilettante alchemist, found that a stone from this locality, after calcination, emitted light in the dark without any external excitation source. The phenonenon discovered by Casciarolo was the first recorded observation of inorganic phosphorescence.
