Clifton is an inner suburb of Bristol and was recorded in the Domesday book as Clistone, the name of the village denoting a 'hillside settlement' and referring to its position on a steep hill.

Although the suburb has no formal boundaries, the area corresponds roughly with the city wards of Clifton, which includes the riverside suburb of Hotwells, and Clifton East.

Borders are for the ward.

Quartz crystals known as "Bristol Diamonds" occurred in the Avon Gorge in Clifton. These became popular novelties for visitors to the spa at Hotwells, Bristol, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Diarist John Evelyn and travel writer Celia Fiennes were amongst those who described them.

Greg & Lettsom (1858) note that amethystine quartz and goethite occur at Clifton. Under amethyst, they state "Gloucestershire: at Clifton; very fine, penetrated by lance-like crystals of hydrous oxide of iron .... also at Providence iron mine, one mile and a half S W of Clifton."

The grid deference given here is for St Vincent's Rocks by the Clifton Suspension Bridge, one of a number of locations given for "Bristol Diamonds"
