Exceptional British schorl crystals (to 4 inches across) were found in a pegmatitic cavity at this location a year or two before 1817. Specimens from this occurrence occasionally surface from old collections and may be labelled Chudleigh or Bovey Tracey as well as Wooley Farm.
The occurrence was a pegmatitic cavity in the Dartmoor granite which was uncovered by ploughing. An account of the find and the extraction of specimens was provided by the mineral dealer John Mawe in 1818. He described the schorl and white apatite crystals as being accompanied by quartz with jasper and ochrey matter, formed in beautiful groups upon granite. At the time of the find the size and perfection of the schorl crystals was outstanding by world standards. Some of the original schorl-bearing material was utilised by the farmer, Mr. Ellis, to build a wall. Disliking its "magpie" appearance Ellis had the wall whitewashed. When the value of the schorl as mineral specimens was recognised, specimens were extracted from the wall and in some collections still retain traces of mortar. Mawe arranged to further excavate the pegmatitic cavity and two workmen were engaged to perform the work. He found an additional pocket and extracted specimens only to see one of the workmen roughly scraping clay off the surface of the crystals with a fork. This accounted for the fact that many of the apatite crystals were mutilated; the workman admitted to Mawe that he'd "dressed them all with his fork to send them away clean."

NB : Early references to this location refer to Woolley Farm. Whilst the 1906 1:10560 Ordnance Survey map of this area shows the location of cottages here as Woolley, other features on the map are spelt Wolleigh (e.g Wolleigh House, Wolleigh Moor Copse). In Mawe's (1818) description of the schorl occurrence he refers to the location as Wolley. The current Ordnance Survey map spells everything as Wolleigh.

Apatite from the locality characteristically shows orange fluorescence in LW-UV light.
