Cymrite is a rare barium tectosilicate, first discovered in 1949. The cymrite locality on Waterfall Creek was the first discovery of the species in New Zealand, found by the New Zealand Geological Survey in 1975.

It is found in a pale coloured band, 5 mms thick, with a narrow pyrite rich layer, with quartz, illite, calcite and mica, in a dense graphtolite-bearing sequence of black shale and chert.

The crystals only reach a maximum of 0.15 mms, confirmed by x-ray diffraction, and a microscope. There is no indication of specimen grade material.

Waterfall Creek could not be located, but the source (Soong et al.) states the location is in the Aorangi Mine area.

Co-ordinates are approximate.

The co-ordinates cited by Soong are: 40 42' 57" S; 172 26' I5" E, however this places the location within the Tasman Sea.
