Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is a fiord in the southwest of New Zealand's South Island within Fiordland National Park, Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) Marine Reserve, and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey (the 2008 Travelers' Choice Destinations Awards by TripAdvisor) and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination. Rudyard Kipling had previously called it the eighth Wonder of the World. The fiord is most commonly accessed via road (State Highway 94) by tour coach, with the road terminating at a small village also called Milford Sound.
(Blattner, 1978) 'Veins of pegmatoid plagioclastite which occur in the granolites contain occasional scapolite, and in one place dumortierite (deep blue, colourless), possibly associated with a secondary carbonate.'
It is the second recorded occurrence of dumortierite in New Zealand, however, Blattner does not locate the site other than near the shores of Milford Sound, in this section of the article. The article in general refers to an area 20 kilometres wide by 30 kilometres long between Milford Sound and the upper Hollyford Valley. Most of the article is a description of the district's rock types rather than specific locations.
