"The Tylden Quarries Company operations are situated on the outskirts of Tylden, close to where the Little Coliban River crosses the Tylden-Woodend road. The quarry has been operating for at least 50 years and has become a popular and prolific zeolite collecting area with cavities up to 150mm across. Zeolites are especially abundant in the northwest corner of the quarry."(Birch 1989)
Access is now (2014) very difficult and finds very limited.

| ⓘ Chabazite-Ca Formula: (Ca,K2,Na2)2[Al2Si4O12]2 · 12H2O Description: "In the Tylden quarry, chabazite is quite abundant as interpenetrating twins of rhombohedral, pseudocubic crystals twinned on (0001). The crystals are colourless, glassy and internally fractured, although they are often uncrazed when first collected. The largest crystals are up to 5 mm across but generally range from 0.5 mm to 2.5 mm in diameter. The crystals often line the entire cavity, coating a black Mn-Fe oxide or in some instances a black waxy substance, possibily hisingerite. Chabazite crystals up to 4 mm across showing complex 'phacolite' twinning are also found at Tylden." |
| ⓘ Gonnardite Formula: (Na,Ca)2(Si,Al)5O10 · 3H2O Description: "At the Tylden quarry, gonnardite has been found abundantly as botryoidal coatings and hemispheres of white acicular sprays up to 5 mm in diameter. These crystals were previously identified as mesolite, however X-ray diffraction and microprobe analysis showed that they consist of a thin natrolite-rich rim on a gonnardite-rich core. This zonation can be seen on broken spheres which show a pearly, white radiating fibrous structure of platy crystals. The gonnardite/natrolite is associated with chabazite and appears to have crystalized first." |
| ⓘ 'Lévyne' Description: "One specimen of levyne has been collected from the Tylden quarry. It consists of thin, roughly hexagonal, translucent plates up to 2 mm in a cavity lined with greenish montmorillonite. The crystals are twinned with (0001) forming the contact plane. Phillipsite crystals are found on the specimen although not in the same cavity as the levyne."
The levyne is not analysed, but given the nature of the other zeolites at Tylden it is likely that it is the Levyne-Ca type. References: |
