Kapunda Mine


An abandoned copper mine.
First commenced operations in 1844.

The mine includes the Charlotte Open Cut, Sherwin Open Cut, the Main Open Cut, and the Stockyard Open Cut.

This site is now under the control of The South Australian Heritage Trust, and all collecting is prohibited.

Ownership of the Kapunda Historic Mine site is held by the Light Regional Council as a result of a gift from the South Australian State Government in the early 1970s.

Terramin announced the discovery of significant REE mineralisation at Kapunda 11 February 2014.

In July 2018 Environmental Copper Recovery Pty Ltd was awarded a Commonwealth Government Grant into copper and gold in-situ recovery mining to run until 2021 (essentially a leaching process involving drilling holes and introducing fluids to dissolve the minerals and pump them out).
