Occurrence consists of outcroppings of Cretaceous era clays exposed by erosion along the shores of Long Island Sound. Localized lenses of grey, lignite-bearing clay are the host of pyrite nodules.

Note: earlier reports of "marcasite" appear to be in error; to date the species has not been documented at this locality.

Description: Pyrite nodules commonly accrete around nuclei of lignified wood; in polished section, most specimens exhibit significant included sand. Specimens frequently become unstable and alter to melanterite and other hydrous iron sulfates
