This locality was first described by William W. Mather in Natural History of New York in Geology of the First Geological District, published 1843. "The locality on the northeast corner of Bog Meadow, or Reservoir Pond,... I found in 1825, when exploring those wild mountains. A fine spring issues from the base of the rock. The limestone is a beautiful flesh-red, very coarsely crystalline,so that large rhombic crystals can be obtained by cleavage, and richer in color than the limestone of this character from any of the other localities from which specimens have been obtained. It contains, in some parts, dark green imbedded grains of augite or hornblene. The locality is not at the northeast corner of the pond, but at the northeast extremity of a small bay of the pond on the east side."

The exposure described here was located in December of 2024. It is usually submerged below the waters of Bog Meadow Reservoir. A recent lack of rainfall has allowed the waters to recede and uncover the exposure, now mostly buried in lake sediment. The salmon calcite and associated mineralization is similar to that of the Brooks Hollow Dam locality to the south.
