The Grande-Dixence Dam is located at the northern extremity of the "Lac des Dix". Another former dam, called the Petite-Dixence is now submerged by the waters of the actual lake. This dam is the center of a large network of dams and tunnels to capture water from different valleys to bring it together in this lake.
There is a hard rock layer across the vally, on which the dam is built. In this rock, there are alpine clefts (few cm thick) which contain albite (small) and beautiful shiny plates of hematite to a a few cm; magnetite occurs also very rarely. Those clefts are mostly filled up with calcite, that has to be etched away to reveal the beautiful hematite frozen in it.
