Coal in São Pedro da Cova was discovered in 1795, but it was only in the early decades of the 20th century that exploitation reached its peak, with an annual extraction of about 330,000 tons. More than 1,600 people worked in the mines during the first half of the 20th century. The coal was transported to Porto, specifically to Monte Aventino (Antas), in small wagons suspended by a 9 km-long cable.

Entire families worked in these coal mines, many having left farming in search of better wages. The men entered the mines via an elevator (cage) and descended nearly 100 meters. The deeper galleries (some exceeding 400 meters) could only be reached on foot. They carried their packed lunches over their shoulders, a carbide lamp in one hand, and an axe in the other. From the cage, they walked barefoot over sharp stones to their workstations, spending eight hours extracting coal.

The work required intense concentration and caution to avoid being buried. Many lost their lives in cave-ins, while others suffered irreversible lung damage.
