Ref.: The Iron Mines of New Jersey (1910), Bayley:11, 382-384; NJ State Geol. Annual Rpts.: (1855):211-215; (1868):567-569; (1873):43-44; (1879):51; (1880):105; (1882):70; (1883):99; (1884):82. A major iron mine in magnetite ore. Started about 1844 and closed 1883. Located 2½ miles West of Dover in Randolph Twp. Main ore vein was 3 to 8 feet thick. Workings featured an open cut 600 feet long by 200 feet deep (by 1855). Underground workings included a 1,100 foot slope at 60º; SW mine = 4 shafts; NE mine = 2 slopes). Produced 30,000 tons ore per year by 1855; 157,376 tons (between 1870 & 1883).
