A former placer Au-PGE (Pt) occurrence/mine located in sec. 11 and in the SW¼ sec. 12, T18N, R10E, MDM, 1.3 km (0.8 mile) N of Snow Point (Moores Flat District) (coordinates of record), on the S side of the Middle Yuba River (2 miles SSE of Alleghany; 500 feet N of the mouth of Jackass Ravine, adjacent to the Sierra County line), on National Forest land. Discovered before 1851. First year of production was 1851. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters. This was the first mine in the region to be systematically worked.
Mineralization is a vein deposit (Deposit model: 273: USGS model code: 36a; Deposit model name: Low-sulfide Au-quartz vein; Mark3 model number: 27), hosted in gabbro, schist, tuff, slate, and serpentinite. The ore body is a vein that strikes N70-80W and dips 40-80NE. Controls for ore emplacement included fractures. The hanging wall is composed of gabbro and the footwall is composed of conglomeritic black slate, schist and tuff. Small bunches of high-grade ore are associated with coarse arsenopyrite. Pt was detected in analysis of native Au samples. The amount is uncertain because individual samples were not labeled as to locality. Local rocks include Mesozoic gabbroic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).
Local structures include: the Melones Fault Zone.
Related tectonic structure: Sierra Nevada Foothills Accreted Terranes.
Workings include underground openings comprised of 4 adits totaling 2,000 feet plus 500 feet of raises.
Production data are found in: Ferguson and Gannett.
Production statistics: Year: 1932 (period = 1851-1932): Au: ^0.49 ounce Au/ton (14 grams Au/metric ton). Total production was about $200,000 (period values) to 1932. The property was idle for many years. Much production of mill rock was at $10 (period values) per ton.
