Greenwood property
A former Th-Ba(baryte) occurrence/claim/mine located in the NE¼NE¼ sec. 35, T21S, R71W, 6th Principal Meridian, on Greenwood property, E of Bear Peak, 3 miles N of the Haputa Ranch, N of Bear Gulch and NW of Dry Lake, 4.9 miles N34E of Querida. Discovered in 1952. Operated by William Klein and Fred Jones (1953-). The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 50 meters.
Mineralization is a Th-Ba(baryte) deposit (Mineral occurrence model information: Model code: 30; USGS model code: 11d; Deposit model name: Thorium-rare-earth veins), hosted in Paleoproterozoic gneiss. The ore body strikes N60W (vein) and dips steeply SW (vein), at a width of 1.22 meters and a length of 182.88 meters, and having a depth-to-top of 0 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included a NW-trending fault zone. Ore is in mineralized veins and shear zones. Th occurs as coatings or disseminated through dikes. Pure thorite G.T. 2 inches in diameter found in baryte masses. Local rocks include felsic and hornblendic gneisses, either separate or interlayered.
Regional geologic structures include the Wet Mountains. Local structures include NW-trending shear zones.
Tectonic Structure: Central Cordillera (Southern Rocky Mountains)
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall depth of 18.29 meters, an overall length of 182.88 meters and an overall width of 1.22 meters and comprised of 5 shafts and 2 prospect pits. The underground workings are mostly caved or filled with water.
Analytical data results: 0.008 to 0.058% equivalent U; 0.001 to 0.002% U, 0.03 to 0.32% equivalent ThO2.
Reported production was 400 pounds of hand sorted thorite.
