The Nogueirinha Mine is a former iron mine located on the southern slope of the Monfurado mountain range, in the parish of Santiago do Escoural, municipality of Montemor-o-Novo. The mining concession for the Nogueirinha mine dates back to 1873. The extraction work was carried out in open pits, some extending several dozen meters with depths reaching up to 30 meters, as well as through galleries and shafts. The ore was transported in wagons on Decauville-type tracks to the loading dock.
Mining operations likely continued during the first three decades of the 20th century. The mine was served by a broad-gauge railway line that connected to the current Alentejo line at Casa Branca station. The locomotives used were from the Sul e Sueste network. At the terminal dock, ore from the Nogueirinha mine and other neighboring concessions was deposited and loaded. The ore was transported to the Barreiro dock, from where it was exported by ship to the steel industry in countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States.
The railway line was dismantled after mining operations ceased. Currently, only a few rails remain in the initial and final sections, along with sleepers and old bridges now covered by dense vegetation. Near the mine, the ruins of the ore loading dock buildings are still visible.

The Nogueirinha Mine Branch was an Iberian-gauge railway line that connected Casa Branca Railway Station (on what is now the Alentejo Line) to the Nogueirinha Mine, a distance of just over five kilometers. The locomotives used belonged to the "Companhia do Sul e Sueste." At the mine's dock, ore from other neighboring concessions was also deposited and loaded. The ore was transported to Barreiro, from where it was exported by ship to the steel industry in countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
From its inception, the Alentejo Line was an important means of transporting ore from the Monfurado and Santa Susana mountains. Later, during the wheat campaigns, its importance became crucial for cereal transport. Around 1867, the first mining concession was granted—the Serra dos Monges Mine in the Monfurado mountains. Following that were the Defesa, Sala Mines; in 1873, the Nogueirinha and Serrinha Mines. That same year, other mines in Ferrarias (Herdade da Gamela), Castelo, and Vale de Arca were also granted concessions. In 1903, the Carvalhal and Casas Novas mines were established, with the last concession in 1904 going to the Serra dos Monges Mine.
In the Monfurado mines, two types of mining coexisted: "open-pit" mining, forming pits, and "underground" mining through shafts and galleries with chimneys. Once extracted, the ore was sorted by men and women by hand or with hammers at the mining fronts or at the loading sites. The ore was then transported in wagons to the railway branch.
The Nogueirinha Mine was served by a broad-gauge branch line that connected to the Alentejo Line at kilometer 91.00 (Casa Branca Station). Unlike the Serra dos Monges Mine, the Sul e Sueste locomotives hauled the wagons to the mine entrance. The dock at this mine served as the convergence point for ore transport from all the mines, being the terminus of the railway branch and also used for storing ore from other concessions. As previously stated, the ore was destined for Barreiro, where it was shipped abroad.
The tracks were lifted after mining operations ceased. Today, only a few rails remain in the initial and final sections, along with sleepers and old bridges now covered by dense undergrowth. Near the mine, the ruins of the ore loading dock buildings are also visible.

A Mina da Nogueirinha é uma antiga mina de ferro localizada na vertente sul da serra de Monfurado, na freguesia de Santiago do Escoural, concelho de Montemor-o-Novo.
A concessão de exploração de minério na mina da Nogueirinha data de 1873. Os trabalhos de lavra eram realizados a céu aberto, por meio de cortas, algumas com extensões de várias dezenas de metros e profundidades que chegavam aos 30m, e por galerias e poços. O transporte do minério era feito em vagonetas em linhas do tipo Decauville até ao cais de embarque.
A exploração da mina terá continuado durante as três primeiras décadas do século XX.
A mina era servida por uma linha de caminho-de-ferro de bitola larga, que ligava à atual linha do Alentejo na estação de Casa Branca. As locomotivas utilizadas eram as da rede do Sul e Sueste.
No cais terminal era feito o depósito e embarque do minério da mina da Nogueirinha e de outras concessões vizinhas. O minério era transportado para o cais do Barreiro, de onde era exportado por barco com destino à indústria siderúrgica de países como o Reino Unido ou Estados Unidos.
A linha foi levantada com o fim da exploração da mina. Atualmente apenas restam uns poucos carris no troço inicial e final, travessas e antigos pontões encobertos pela densa vegetação. São ainda visíveis, junto da mina, as ruínas das edificações do cais de embarque do minério.

O Ramal da Mina da Nogueirinha foi uma linha de bitola ibérica que ligava a Estação Ferroviária de Casa Branca (na hoje Linha do Alentejo) à Mina da Nogueirinha, numa distância de cinco quilómetros e poucos metros. As locomotivas utilizadas pertenciam à “Companhia do Sul e Sueste”.
No próprio cais da mina era feito o depósito e embarque do minério das outras concessões vizinhas. O minério era transportado para o Barreiro, de onde era exportado por barco com destino à indústria siderúrgica de países como o Reino Unido ou os Estados Unidos da América.
A Linha do Alentejo, logo na sua instalação, era um importante meio de de escoamento do minério da Serra de Monfurado e de Santa Susana. Mais tarde e durante as campanhas do trigo, a sua importância foi determinante para os cereais.
Cerca do ano de 1867 era concessionada a primeira exploração de minério – a Mina da Serra dos Monges naquela Serra de Monfurado. De seguida, vieram as Minas da Defesa, da Sala; já em 1873, as da Nogueirinha e da Serrinha. Neste mesmo ano eram concessionadas as outras minas das Ferrarias (Herdade da Gamela), do Castelo e do Vale de Arca. Em 1903 foram as do Carvalhal e Casas Novas, ficando a última concessão para o ano de 1904, com a Mina da Serra dos Monges.
Mas minas do Monfurado coexistiram dois tipos de lavra: o "desmonte", minério a céu aberto formando cortas, e a "subterrânea" através de poços e galerias com chaminés. Feita a extração, o minério era triado por homens e mulheres à mão ou auxiliados com marretas nas frentes de desmonte ou já nos locais de embarque. O transporte era depois feito em vagões até ao ramal ferroviário.
A Mina da Nogueirinha era servida por um ramal de via larga, que entroncava na Linha do Alentejo ao quilómetro 91,00 (Estação de Casa Branca). Ao contrário do que se verificava na “Mina dos Monges”, eram as próprias locomotivas do Sul e Sueste que rebocavam os vagões até à entrada da mina. Era no cais desta mina que convergiam os transportes de todas elas, sendo também o términos do ramal férreo e servindo ainda o cais para depósito do minério proveniente das outras concessões. Como já se afirmou, o minério tinha como destino o Barreiro, onde embarcava para fora do território nacional.
Os carris foram levantados com o fim da exploração da mina. Nos dias de hoje, apenas subsistem uns poucos carris nos troços inicial e final, travessas e antigos pontões encobertos pelo denso matagal. São, também, visíveis, junto da mina, as ruínas das edificações do cais de embarque do minério.
