The Epine slag heap was born from the accumulation of coal shale in 1890, ending in 1958. At that time, the slag heap had several cones. From 1981 to 1985, the site was exploited by S.A. Ryan-Europe to recover coal, modifying the original shape of the slag heap. The remodelling and greening of the slag heap immediately followed. The Epine slag heap today has irregular slopes and a vast plateau extending over almost its entire summit, where there are several ponds dug during the remodelling of the site. To the north is a marginal ridge, against which the wall of the Neuville cemetery is located.
