Pedreiras da Caleira de Escusa, São Salvador de Aramenha, Marvão, Distrito de Portalegre, Portugal


The Caleiras da Escusa, located between the small villages of Senhora da Vitória and Porto da Espada and classified as a National Monument, consist of 19 Roman lime kilns, with 9 of them grouped together, that utilized limestone from the surrounding area and the Serra de S. Mamede. These lime kilns played a significant role in the region's economy until they were deactivated in the 1960s.

Os fornos e caleiras da Escusa, em São Salvador da Aramenha, Marvão, já estão classificados como monumento nacional, na sequẽncia da publicação em Diário da República (1ª série, no. 225,21 Nov. 2012 - Decreto no. 29/2012).
A classificação das caleiras da Escusa teve por base os critérios constantes da legislação, relativos ao “interesse do bem como testemunho notável de vivências históricas, à extensão do bem e ao que nele se reflete do ponto da vista da memória coletiva, à sua importância do ponto de vista da investigação histórica e às circunstâncias suscetíveis de acarretarem diminuição ou perda da sua integridade”.
A atividade remonta ao período romano.
“Os fornos e caleiras da Escusa constituem uma importante memória da atividade de fabrico da cal no concelho de Marvão”, refere-se no preâmbulo do diploma, que adianta ainda que, “sendo plausível que tal atividade, tão relevante para a economia local, remonte ao período romano, as Caleiras da Escusa atestam a sua permanência secular e a sua laboração até há poucas décadas”.
“Estas estruturas, cujo número e caráter monumental é raro no nosso país, estão situadas na proximidade da pedreira que as fornecia e mantêm ainda as suas principais características arquitetónicas e funcionais, constituindo assim um núcleo de superior interesse histórico e patrimonial”.
