Launceston is a town and parish of the same name located in east Cornwall close to the border with the county of Devon.
Whilst not renowned for mining activity some very small scale and ancient activity has taken place within the town.
At some point during the second world war, old workings were discovered by workmen during excavation work for a water tank in the valley lying to the west of Western Road. There have been suggestions these working related to a 'Wheal Launceston' although there is no definitive documentary proof to support this.
There is also a report from the May 1843 copy of the Mining Journal that a 'large copper lode' was discovered during the sinking of a large well at a depth of 200 feet from surface.
An application was made to mine the lode, but this was refused on the grounds of such work would risk the town's wells running dry.
