Name:
Named in 1840 by Charles Upham Shepard in honor of Alois "Lewis" Joseph Xaver Freiherr (Baron) von Lederer [May 20, 1773 Wien, Holy Roman Empire (Austria) - December 20, 1842 New York, New York, USA], mineral collector and Consul General of the Austrian Empire to the United States of America (1820-1842) {King, 2012, King and Chinellato, 2012}. The lederite debate was heated (Silliman, Jr., 1844; Shepard, 1844) and not finally understood until Williams (1885). Note: "Lederite" of Torrey (1829) was a typographical error for "Ledererite".

Lederite is a variety of titanite, generally red brown to dark brown, that also has a distinct parting, originally mistaken as a cleavage. Because this "cleavage" was not present in ordinary titanite, it was described as a separate species. This mineral is one of the earliest minerals, though not the earliest, that was recognized to have parting, instead of true cleavage (Williams, 1885).
