About HokutoliteHide

Formula:
(Ba,Pb)SO4
Name:
Named after the Japanese name of a hot spring in Taiwan.
A Pb2+-rich (plumboan) variety of baryte deposited by very acid hot springs. Generally also contains minor strontium and minute traces of radium, making recently deposited hokutolite mildly radioactive (although this disappears over time and is no longer detectable in specimens that are geologically not recent).

Originally described from Hokuto springs (now Peitou), Taipei Co., Taiwan Province, Taiwan.

See also radian barite.
