Named in 1925 by Franz Müllbauer in honor of Richard Julius Baldauf [March 7, 1848 Chemnitz, Hungary - April 28, 1931 Desden, Germany], German mining engineer at Lavrion, Greece and later coal mines in Saxony and Bohemia and mineral collector in whose collection the first specimen was found.
