Name:
Name introduced by d`Andrada 1800 for a yellowish garnet from an unspecified mine near Drammen, Buskerud, Norway. Name from the greek αλλος, another, and χροια, color, due to the change of color of the heated product (with sodium ammonium hydrogen phospate, reagent in blowpipe analysis) when cooling.

Later showed to be a synonym of andradite.
