Name introduced by Igelström (1851) for a Fe-bearing manganese silicate thought to be related to neotocite, found at Harstigen, Pajsberg, Värmland, Sweden. A re-examination of topo-type specimens of stratopeite from Harstigen by Clark, Easton & Mount (1978) showed it to be identical with neotocite.
