Named by M.J. Jacobsen et al. in 2012 in honor of Níels Örn Óskarsson (1944-), volcanologist at the University of Iceland, for his work on Icelandic fumaroles.

Isostructural with:
The low-temperature form of AlF3. The Al analogue of waimirite-(Y). Anhydrous counterpart of rosenbergite and 'UM1988-02-F:AlHO'.
