Named by Gustav Adolf Kenngott in 1856 from the type locality Monzoni Mountains, Fassa Valley, Trento Province, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy in honor of Johann Vorhauser [Lueg am Brenner, Austria 1784 - September 5, 1865 Wilten, Austria], Austrian mine inspector and co-author of Die Mineralien Tirols (1852).
Medium to dark brown coloured variety of serpentine (antigorite) containing manganese.
