Name introduced by Hausmann (1813), as a unifying term for datolite and botryolite from Arendal iron mines, Norway. The name is after professor Jens Esmark (1763-1839), University of Christiania, Oslo, and discoverer of datolite.
Not to be confused with Esmarkite (of Berzelius).
