Name:
Voltzite was named in 1833 by Joseph Jean Baptiste Xavier Fournet in honor of Philippe-Louis Voltz [August 15, 1785, Strassbourg, France - February 6, 1840, Paris, France], paleontologist, metallurgist, mineral curator with the School of Mines, and Inspector General of Mines. Voltz was a major innovator in the use of hot air and greatly improved the design of the blast furnace.
Wurtzite intergrown with an organometallic zinc compound, possibly a zinc salt of a polyoxymethylene glycol or their sulfuretted analogues (Frondel, 1967).
