The name 'Fool's Gold' is a common name given to primarily pyrite, but also other sulfides such as chalcopyrite, marcasite and pyrrhotite because of its golden appearance.

There are many tales of wannabe prospectors finding what they believed to be riches in gold only to be told it was "fool's gold" and worthless.
