Name:
Named by Charles Upham Shepard in 1848 in honour of its discoverer, Lewis White Williams (20 December 1804, East Goshen Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA - 19 September 1873, West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA), a mineralogist and geologist of West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Williams was on the 1857 "Camel Expedition" with Lieutenant Ned Beale. White was tasked with noting the geologic formations encountered during the expedition, which used 77 camels to carry gear from Indianola, Texas to Fort Tejon, California.
A translucent, pale apple-green variety of antigorite.
