Named in 1974 in honor of Fiorenzo Mazzi (1924 Forence, Italy - 25 September 2017, Pavia, Italy), Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Pavia, Italy for his contributions to the understanding of zeolite structure.

Originally called simply mazzite, the discovery of sodium-dominant mazzite promoted the name mazzite to a series and this species became mazzite-Mg.
