Named in 2004 by Dan Holtstam, Jekabs Grins, and Per Nysten in honor of Prof. Ulf Hålenius (b. 1951), professor and Director of the Mineralogy Department at the Natural History Museum, Stockholm, Sweden, for his contributions to the spectroscopy of minerals and the mineral sciences in general.
Isostructural with:
Old note: A possible Ce-dominant analogue is IMA-coded as UM1994-05-F:OREE.

New note: the Ce analogue is accepted, as håleniusite-(Ce).
